My work has evolved from focussing on dialect and community to investigating the dynamics between the social and physical urban landscape. I explore ideas surrounding social vulnerability and the uncanny. In most cases, each painting is sourced from evocative newspaper articles which allow me to create my own visual language.
My most recent work was informed by Brutalist Architecture - specifically that which makes up the iconic High Rise. Here I investigated current issues surrounding social housing and social cleansing which portrayed the physical landscape having a direct impact on society.
Typically, my process combines screen-prints of my own digital and analogue photography with large scale paintings and drawings. This creates a body of uncanny paintings that strikes a powerful reaction from the viewer.
I am scrutinous in my approach to aesthetics. I always work with materials closely associated with the urban city like - metal, wood and concrete. This is crucial to me as they represent an architectural heritage within the post industrial city that resonates with a fading mass culture and working class that deserves to be documented.
